SOCCER BASICS FOR BEGINNERS

Becoming a master of the ball takes a lot of time and practice. There are tons of ways you can practice with the ball at your house when getting started in soccer. I’m going to share with you one easy way to start getting comfortable with the ball while improving your technique at the same time. 

Juggling is a skill that you can practice on your own. I remember I first learned how to juggle in my backyard. My mom picked up the ball and started juggling tiny touches on her toes. It was rhythmic and mesmerizing to watch. She was keeping the ball in the air so gently. It was impressive! I had no idea that she possessed that skill. I wanted to learn too.

I became desperate to master the skill. After school, I would race into the backyard alone to figure it out. Juggling isn’t something that you necessarily need to be taught. It is a skill that you discover through trial and error on your own. I don’t remember my mom teaching me how to juggle. She gave me a few pointers but she wasn’t by my side after that. At first, my juggling was a mess. I did not become discouraged but instead I was so persistent that when I was 11, I was getting 200+ juggles consistently. When I was in middle school, I remember watching YouTube and learning tons of tricks. The first trick I learned was “around the world”. It seemed like it took me an eternity to learn it but I eventually did and got so good I could do it with my eyes closed.

What’s juggling good for?

  • Developing ball control with different parts of the body

  • First touch

  • Rhythm

  • Coordination

  • Balance

  • Proper mechanics for shooting and passing

Juggling is a key foundation to establish for beginners. It will take time to learn. Literally thousands of touches and countless hours. Have fun with it and stay encouraged when it gets tough!

Some very basic ways to learn juggling are:

  1. Doing one juggle at a time and catching the ball

  2. Practice consecutive juggles with a lighter ball like one of these (insert pic of small bouncy ball)

  3. Allowing the ball to bounce in between each touch
