Soccer 101: Tips for Beginners of All Ages
Whether you're just picking up a soccer ball for the first time or looking to refine your skills, this guide is here to help you get started. From choosing the right equipment to immersing yourself in the game, these tips are designed to set you on the path to becoming a confident and skilled player at any age. Dive in and discover how you can kick off your soccer journey with the right foot!
1. Get a Quality Outdoor Football
When looking to purchase a football for yourself, you want a ball that will last as long as possible. Hand-stitched balls are more durable. Machine-stitched balls and those with seams held together only by adhesive will not last very long. The best ball is hand-stitched and bonded with adhesive.
Cost: A good training ball will range anywhere from $30 to $45.
Top Brands: Select, Adidas, Puma
Pro Tip: It is okay to practice with a ball that is not your size. For players older than 12, having an extra ball at home that is a smaller size is a good way to challenge your technique. For younger players, having a smaller ball is easier to handle, but it is okay to practice with a bigger ball.
2. As Much as We Love to Train Barefoot, We Will Need Boots at Some Point!
The MOST important thing when looking for cleats is comfort. The fit should be snug, with maybe a 1/2 inch max space from your toe to the top of the cleat. Go to the store and try cleats on. It might look funny, but jog and jump with them in the aisle. If you live in Miami, FL, Soccer Locker is your best bet for cleats. In Jacksonville, FL, you can find good boots at Academy Sports. You can find soccer cleats at Dick’s or any other sporting goods store, but finding a soccer-specific store would help with options, and you can get advice from experts.
The SECOND most important thing is material. True leather cleats will last the longest and will also stretch out. Synthetic cleats are true to size and will not stretch.
Pro Tip: If buying leather, buy 1 to 1/2 a size smaller.
Cost: A good cleat in youth sizes will range from $50 to $70. A good cleat in adult sizes will range from $90 to $200. Players who are growing rapidly in height can use a cheaper synthetic cleat because they will outgrow the cleat every 6 months to a year.
Top Brands: Adidas and Nike
3. Watch as Much Football as You Can!
Go out to a local high school, adult league, or college game. We have a ton of universities like FIU, UM, Barry, Nova Southeastern, St. Thomas, and Broward College that have competing soccer teams, plus many more in South Florida. North Florida also has universities with soccer programs like UNF, JU, and Edward Waters.
Best Channels for Soccer: beIN Sports, ESPN, ESPN+, NBC, FOX Sports, CBS Sports, Telemundo, Univision
Find out when the best tournaments are showing. The World Cup, the Olympics, UEFA Champions League, Copa America, and European Cup are just a few of the world’s exciting tournaments.
4. Play as Much as You Can!
Regardless of your age, find fun ways to get involved with football! Train your skills on your own, get a friend and practice together, join a recreational league, join a pickup group, practice your skills in gym class, and find other ways to get touches in and have fun with the game.
Follow your favorite soccer players, influencers, and training programs online. My favorite way to learn anything about the game was through watching YouTube. I learned my first juggling tricks in middle school and enhanced my 1v1 attacking game by watching videos of my favorite players and tutorials on YouTube. Almost every day, right after getting home from school, I would put on a video and head into my backyard. It felt satisfying to challenge myself and accomplish new skills on my own.
Through Barefoot, I am able to provide you with content through videos and written material to help you build your confidence on and off the field. My goal is to help you become the most confident and independent player you can be. Use your coaches for guidance, but remember to be bold in using your own abilities to develop yourself as you strive to become the best player you can be. I want you to take charge of your own development. Most of my material is FREE for a reason. Use it, share it, and enjoy it!
